FAQ
Commonly Asked Dental Questions
What causes sensitive teeth?
Sensitive teeth are caused by a slight recession in your gum line. When this happens, the dentin under your gum line shows through, and external elements such as water or food can touch the sensitive nerve. Please call us if you would like to discuss treatment for sensitive teeth issues; we are happy to provide recommendations for gels, toothpastes, or even dental procedures that can help with the pain.
How can I prevent tooth decay or gum disease?
To maintain healthy teeth and gums, you need to brush and floss regularly. A consistent daily routine will help to keep your teeth and gums in great shape.
Where does gingivitis come from and how is it treated?
Bacteria in your mouth can enter your gums, causing gingivitis. Symptoms of gingivitis include inflamed, irritated gums and bleeding. We recommend regular dental hygiene appointments where we will show you how to brush and floss properly which can help to prevent gingivitis.
How do you get periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria in your mouth entering your gums. If not properly treated, the condition can worsen and cause: bad breath, abscesses, gum recession, increased gum sensitivity, and even tooth loss.
What is the recommended treatment for periodontal disease?
We can help to treat periodontal disease through a variety of procedures including periodontal cleaning, root planing & scaling, antibiotics, and laser therapy. In extreme cases, periodontal surgery may be required.
Why are some fillings silver while others are white?
Silver fillings are made from a metal alloy and are commonly referred to as Amalgam. This solution has been around for years. Because the metal can expand and contract with changes in temperature, few bacteria can enter the tooth once it is filled, and the tooth remains strong.
White fillings are made from glass or plastic polymers and resemble the same color as your tooth. These fillings are more cosmetically appealing and will look and feel like your regular tooth.

Is tooth bonding a good idea?
If you have gaps in your front teeth or wish to change a tooth’s color, tooth bonding may be a good solution for you. The results are fast, and the process is very cost-effective.
Should I consider porcelain veneers?
We are able to change your smile by affixing thin pieces of porcelain to your natural teeth. If you are interested in changing the shape, color, or size of your teeth, porcelain veneers should be considered. The process often takes two visits, and we will provide you with all of the information you need to decide if veneers are the right choice for you.
What is a crown on my tooth?
A crown is a permanent fixture that covers your entire tooth. It can change the shape, color, and size of your natural tooth.
Would you recommend a dental implant?
If you are missing a tooth or a tooth root, a dental implant is an alternative. By inserting a titanium screw-like piece into your jaw under the bone, we are able to place a new tooth on top of the screw.
Are there any advantages to dental implants?
Yes! Dental implants function and appear just like your natural teeth. They are permanent and easy to maintain with regular hygiene visits.
Am I a good candidate for a dental implant?
Possibly. While most people are, there are sometimes exceptions due to illness or extenuating circumstances. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your medical history and determine if a dental implant is a good fit for you.
How many visits do dental implants require, and what happens at those visits?
Typically, dental implant treatment will require 3 to 4 visits. The outline usually looks like this:
- Visit 1: X-rays are done and an impression is taken.
- Visit 2: With local anesthesia, the implant is placed through a small incision in your gums. The open area is closed with sutures.
- Visit 3: After about 3 months, your 3 rd visit occurs and we will place a porcelain crown over the implant.
What is the cost for a dental implant?
This can vary based on your specific treatment plan and your insurance coverage. If you are interested in a dental implant, please call us to schedule an initial consultation, and we will go into detail about the full procedure and the cost involved.
How long will my dental implant last?
It is important to maintain proper care of your teeth and keep a routine dental hygiene schedule. With proper care, a dental implant will last approximately 30 years.
